Lithuanian is the official language of Lithuania, spoken by about 4
million native speakers (Lithuanians). The Lithuanian name for the
language is lietuvių kalba.
There are two
major dialects. The first is Aukshtaitish, also referred to as
Aukshtaichiai or Aukštaitian or High Lithuanian spoken by southern,
eastern and northern Lithuanians.
The second is Shamaitish, referred to variably as Samogitian,
Zemaitish, Zemachiai, Zemaiciu or Low Lithuanian spoken by western
Lithuanians. The two major dialects are further subdivided into
several variants.
The modern standard is based on the Southern sub-dialect of West
Aukshtaitish (High Lithuanian). The earliest Lithuanian texts,
however, are in Low Lithuanian.
